Tutorial: Search the site

Search for the information you want to find on the HIA website.

The search button found at the top of each page only searches the website itself not the databases. You need to search the databases separately. For instructions on how to search the databases, go to the Tutorial for the relevant Database Search.

You can search for any number of words or phrases that appear anywhere in the web pages. The broader the terms the better the chance of finding the information you are looking for. If you are unable to find the information you are looking for, contact HIA Staff.

Search results will be displayed on your screen in terms of their relevance to your search query. Once your search results are displayed, click on the most relevent result and complete details will be displayed.
For example: If you are interested in the topic "obesity" type this into the search box.
Click on the most relevant search query.

Advanced Search Options:

Containing any of the words:
Select this option if you are searching for terms related to a particular issue.
For example: You are interersted in finding information about obesity in children.
You would use this search; Obesity children

Containing the phrase:
Select this option if you are looking for a phrase.
Example: alberta healthy living

Containing none of the words:Select this option to use Boolean commands to narrow your search. For example, you want to find out about Shaken Baby Syndrome in other parts of Canada, not just in Alberta.
Type "Shaken Baby Syndrome" in Search Field and
"Not Alberta" in the "containing none of the words" field.

This finds only those pages containing "Shaken Baby Syndrome" in other provinces/countries but not in Alberta.
