Community Based Water Safety Education
Many Canadians are investing in their homes as the place to play and relax. This trend includes an increasing
investment in water recreation through the addition of hot tubs and private pools in the backyard. The
introduction of inexpensive, easy to install above-ground pools available at many box stores has made it very
easy to add a backyard pool - often without an adequate understanding of the associated risks. Other trends
include the introduction of water features in the garden as well developing communities around artificial lake
and storm water retention ponds. All of these trends increase the water-related risks and the need for safety
education within communities.
This session will introduce Lifesaving Society research into drowning risks associated with water in and
around the home and the surrounding community. The session will share solutions for creating awareness
about the hazards and education to prevent these potential water-related injuries and deaths. The solutions
include:
• an understanding of relevant regulations such as the Alberta Building Code and Health Regulations
• Lifesaving Society safety standards such as the Lifesaving Society Private Pool Safety Standards
• Lifesaving Society community water safety education resources such as the Water Smart Tool Kit and the
“Within Arm’s Reach” campaign
Confirmed Speaker:
Mr. Larry Patterson
Technical Director, Lifesaving Society, Alberta and Northwest Territories Branch
