Q: I can't get any of the links to open. What's wrong?
A: Our site is set up so that when you click on one of the links presented, a new browser window opens to display the new page.
There are two things that could prevent you from being able to see the health information resource pages:
You may already have a second browser window open, minimized at the bottom of the screen.
If you have enabled a Popup Blocker, it may be preventing it from opening the link. To override the Popup Blocker, hold down the "Control" button and right click the mouse at the same time.
The problem could be in the version of the browser you are using. In order for the new window to open to display the resource, the browser must be compatible with JavaScript. Netscape 3.0 and later, and Internet Explorer 4.0 and later are both compatible. In earlier versions of Netscape Navigator, a new window will open but will display nothing. Earlier versions of IE will give you an error message.
Q. When I search using your Google Search option, the information sits behind the Left Navigation Bar. Why?
A: The Google search is installed in Health In Action and is not bound by our page width. If the search term is quite long, the search results will not fit on the page. You can change the size of the text in order to view the information by clicking on View>> Text Size>>smaller
If you are still unable to view the information, trying installing the Google Toolbar [1]and use it to search the "Current Site".
Q. It's difficult to read due to the size of the font. Can I change font size for your site?
A: We've designed the site to make it as easy to read as possible. However, if you find that the text is too small to read (or too big and takes up too much room), you can adjust the size of the text in your browser.
For Internet Explorer 5.0, select "View" from the menu, point to "Text Size", and select the size you want.
For Netscape 4.0, select "View" from the menu, and then select "Increase Font" or "Decrease Font". You can continue increasing or decreasing the font (text) until it is the size you want.
For other browser versions and types, consult the browser's Help menu.
Q. I'm unable to open a pdf document, why?
A. Many of the documents on our site are in pdf format. You must have Adobe Reader installed on your computer in order to read pdf documents. Adobe Reader can be downloaded quickly and for free at
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html [2]
If you have enabled a Popup Blocker, it may be preventing it from opening the pdf document. To override the Popup Blocker, hold down the "Control" button and right click the mouse at the same time.
Q. How do I include a link to my web site?
A. All sites must meet the Selection Criteria established by Health In Action before being posted on Health In Action. Selection Criteria [2] can be found in the About Us section. Once it is determined that your site does in fact satisfy the Selection Criteria, your site will be added to Health In Action, and will be checked on a regular basis to ensure it continues to meet HIA criteria.
Technical Questions - Databases
Q: I don't know my username and password
A: You can request your username and password directly from the web site. If you do not remember your password, you may click the "Request new password" link below the login form to be taken to the request new password form. From here, you may enter either your username or your e-mail address to have a new temporary password emailed to you. This temporary password will enable you to login to the site and enter a new password.
Q: How do I delete information from any of the databases?
A: Any database deletions must be done by HIA administration. Simply send Research Assistant [3] a request and the information will be deleted.
Q. I noticed my organization name is incorrect, how do I correct this?
A. This function can only be preformed by HIA Staff. Send a request to Research Assistant [4] to have your organization information revised.
Technical Questions - Listservs
Q. I posted a message to the listserv but it didn't seem to work, what can I do?
A. Check that the correct email address was used.
Only members of the listserv can post messages.
You may only post messages from the email address that you have subscribed in the system
Ensure you are using the correct email address for the listserv.
If you have an attachment with the message, how large is the file?
Does it have a greeting that looks like spam ...example Dear Friends will be filtered
and listserv will not process it. Delete or change the greeting and resend.
Q. How can I find out who else is subscribed to the list?
A. Your listserv must be set up to allow members to view the list. Most listservs hosted by HIA do not allow this option. However, if your listserv is set up to view the member's list, you may do so from the information page of the listserv in question. Provide your login id and password in the field "view subscribers list".
Q. How do I change my subscription
A. If you have recently changed your email address, go to the Edit Options on the information page of the appropriate listserv, and enter your email address. You will be prompted for your email address & Password.
If you encounter problems, contact hia@ualberta.ca [5] for assistance.
Q. Can I include an attachment to my message? If so, what is the limit?
A. Yes, attachments are allowed to accompany messages to listservs. However, messages must be attached to the original message. If messages are forwarded, attachments are lost.
There is no limit to the size of the attachment, however, if attachments are large, this can cause members mailboxes to be filled to capacity. It is better to provide a link to large documents in the body of the email.
Contact the List Administrator at hia@ualberta.ca [6] to have it hosted temporarily on the Health In Action web site if needed.
Q. I'm going to be out of the office for a short period of time, can I discontinue receiving messages for this time?
A. This is a great idea, as most people on the list, do not want to receive "out of office" auto replies. In the edit options, you can temporarily disable your participation in the listserv.
Set the Mail delivery option to Enabled to receive messages posted to this mailing list. Set it to Disabled if you want to stay subscribed, but don't want mail delivered to you for a while (e.g. you're going on vacation). If you disable mail delivery, don't forget to re-enable it when you come back; it will not be automatically re-enabled.
Or contact hia@ualberta.ca [7] to unsubscribe you for the time you will be away.
Q. I have been away for a short period of time and want to view the archives but I don't have a password.
A. Your password would have been included in the Welcome Message sent to you when you first subscribed to the listserv. If you did not save that message, go to the information page and enter your email address in the edit options field. From here, you simply click on the button "send me my password". Your password will arrive in your email box within minutes.
The archives contain the listserv posts for 1 calendar year. The archives are sorted by month.
