What you can expect to find

Health In Action was created to provide health practitioners working in the fields of health promotion and injury prevention with relevant and up-to-date information and networking opportunities. All of the information and resources you will find on this website have been evaluated using a rigorous quality assurance criteria (Refer to the Quality Assurance Selection Criteria.)

On the Health In Action website you will find links to health promotion and injury prevention resources and programs from across the province. Information regarding resources and programs from other provinces and some international ones are included as well. You will also find current news releases, feature articles and listings of conferences and other events detailed for your convenience.

Some of the key features that you will find within the Health In Action site are:

  • Comprehensive databases that provide contact information for over one hundred organizations and over 1300 individuals working in the health promotion or injury prevention field;
  • Details of hundreds of different provincial programs related to health promotion and injury prevention;
  • Regular postings of newsletters, upcoming events and conferences, job opportunities, and feature articles;
  • Methods and strategies for evaluating health promotion and injury prevention programs;
  • Dynamic theme pages that offer relevant topic of health promotion and injury prevention.
  • Web links to many provincial and national professional organizations;
  • 12 discussion groups, that provide networking and sharing opportunities to people working in special interest areas;

Health In Action is growing every day as more contacts, documents and features are added to the site. Make sure that you come to the site on a regular basis to see what is new!

Finding your way around the site

In the top right hand corner of the home page you will find a button marked - Site Map. This button will connect you to a map of everything on the Health In Action Website.
Each Health In Action page also provides you with a left-hand side menu bar with 11 options:

  • What's New: Connects you to a listing of all the items that have been posted in the last month.
  • About Us: Presents background information on Health In Action's mission and values and provides a link to the Quality Assurance Criteria document that all posting and links are measured against before being added to the Health In Action website.
  • Partners & Operations: Connects you to details about the partners of Health In Action and the structure of the project.
  • Databases: We have four databases of information available. You can search for contacts, programs, research and resources. These databases contain over 6000 files. We would welcome your contribution!
  • News & Events: This section contains links to newsletters, news releases, conferences, events and feature articles. Check this section often for new material.
    We would be happy to help promote your conferences news releases, or articles and reports.
  • Theme Pages: A theme page is a section of the website that is dedicated to a single health promotion or injury prevention topic. We are always looking for dynamic topic ideas for theme pages, so contact the Project Manager.
  • Health Networking: Connects you to the many discussion groups or listservs, job opportunities and web links for both practitioners and the public.
  • Web Connections: This section provides connections to hundreds of websites belonging to agencies and organizations, community sites, journals and articles that deal with health promotion and injury prevention. Links are also present for Alberta's regional health authorities. We have done the web-search for you, come and take a look!
  • Help & Tutorial: Connects you to this page (you are here!)
  • Contact and Feedback: This button gives you access to emailing the Health In Action staff directly with a question, comment or concern. It also allows you to fill out a survey regarding your impression of the website. Your comments are always welcome. Thank you for taking the time to give your opinion.

How to search the Health In Action site

There are two different ways to search for information in the Health In Action site. You may search the website as a whole excluding the databases, or you may search a database:

  • Keyword search: By using the search button in the top right-hand corner of the home page you can search the entire site for your subject of interest. Simply type in the topic that you are searching for and then chose a title from the search results. Suggestions for keywords can be found here.
  • Database search: There are 4 databases to choose from. You can conduct a search of a database for your information by following the steps below.
    • Click on the database that you are interested in searching. You will have different options to search by depending on the database that you have chosen.
    • Type in the topic that you are interesting searching for. For example; someone's name, a topic by keyword or a title.
    • Click on the correct item in the search results.
